Thought #22- What is the problem with being Happy?

Many of you might wonder what’s wrong with being happy?

Shouldn’t we be happy about graduating or passing that exam or working in a dream company or buying that house we worked so hard for.

Shouldn’t we be happy— at least?

Honestly, I don’t know how to answer this in just one line right now.

But, I think— the major issue is feeling upset, sad, and depressed if you are not able to achieve all this— or if you achieve it later than others, not according to your timeline.

The issue is getting carried away by events, situations, and people that life throws at you—and start blaming the world for how you feel.

The issue is not being in control and spending this life on external stimuli. One moment, you feel good. The next moment, you don’t. Now you’re happy, and later you’re not— constantly on an emotional roller coaster ride.

The issue is going through this life believing happiness is out there somewhere.

And most importantly, the issue is not being in the driver’s seat and going through this journey of life believing you have lost control.

Or maybe you are in fact in the driver’s seat— but it’s automatic. Just like how an automatic car driver— we absorb everything happening around us, react to it, and make decisions every second.

But the real question is: why?

Because deep down, we believe that the way we feel is solely dependent on external events, situations, things, and people—and that we have no control over it.

Guys! If we have started believing, ‘If things are externally good, I’ll be internally happy—otherwise, I won’t,’ then I think it’s time we slowly and gradually start changing the way we think because this thought isn’t helping us.

At last, I’d like to end this with a quote:

Your world is not somewhere out there. It starts from within your mind. Your mind creates thoughts which in turn create your feelings and emotions.

  1. True, as long as the external events are being a key factor of our emotional state, we can’t really have a control over it. The best way is to have a control on the amount of attention we give to things that take shape in form of our thoughts.

  2. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

Control and awareness of our state of mind are key. But the most important step is first understanding that external events do not dictate our emotions—it’s the thoughts we nurture in our minds that shape how we perceive those events.

There’s a quote that resonates with this idea: “What you focus on expands”.

The quote says what YOU focus on expands, so we do have that power .

I’d love to hear your thoughts—how do you personally maintain control over your focus and emotions?
